Q: Under what circumstances would our group want the Enterprise Shared Database Edition?
A: This edition is for multiple facilities whose needs include one or more of the following:
- Central office wants “real-time” access to all member facility databases.
- Central office wants to analyze the combined data from all member facilities and identify outliers.
- Central office wants to standardize data collection techniques and the screen design.
- A group of hospitals wants to form a consortium and compare performance with their peers.
- A group of hospitals wants to perform a multi-hospital study of a new infection control technique or product.
Q: With Enterprise Shared-Database Edition, will all facilities in the group have to use the exact same database (or setup)?
A: All facilities wanting to compare or combine data must use exactly the same fields and codes to make meaningful multi-facility analyses possible. But the Enterprise Shared-Database Edition does not require all the facilities in a corporation to use a SINGLE database (or setup). The Central Office might create one database for Ambulatory Care facilities, another for Long Term Care facilities, and a third database accessible to Acute Care hospitals. However, all these databases must be located on a single AICE server. We recommend that one Infection Control Professional (ICP) from the group be chosen to coordinate policies related to uniform data entry, codes, and data analysis. All ICPs in comparable facilities will need to agree on a common AICE screen design, fields and shared code lists.
Q: Some or all of our facilities already have AICE. Why would we want to upgrade to the Enterprise Shared-Database Edition? What will it cost to upgrade?
A: Choose this Edition to extend the power of AICE to more facilities, compare data across facilities, and add the convenience of managing AICE for multiple facilities from a central IT location. This Edition allows a single server to run AICE for multiple facilities, potentially lowering IT costs. This Edition also simplifies the management of AMSA payments, which are made from a single location. When a group chooses this Edition, a custom quote is prepared so that you pay only for the new components the participating group members need to standardize on the same software modules, plus customized Implementation Service fees for your particular needs.
Q: Some of our facilities are already using AICE. What will happen to their existing data if they get the Enterprise Shared-Database Edition?
A: The group will need to start with a new Enterprise screen design. Existing AICE users (with version 2.5 and above) will still be able to access their "old" AICE data although it will not be in the shared database.
Q: Eventually, we want to compare individual hospital infection rates with our own corporate-wide "standard"; like NNIS-NHSN does nationally. Is that possible with the AICE Enterprise Shared-Database Edition?
A: Yes, ICPA provides an additional service to Enterprise Edition AMSA subscribers. After your organization has collected 1 year's worth of combined data, ICPA can provide you with your own comparison file. Contact aice@icpa.net for more information.
Q: What are the hardware requirements for the Enterprise Shared-Database Edition?
A: The hardware requirements are described at http://www.icpa.net/aice-hw-requirements.html. The Enterprise Edition must be run on a WAN with a high speed Internet connection.

It used to take me a full day to run monthly reports, but using AICE I can get them printed and mailed in two hours. One of the best reports is doing yearly surgeon specific reports. They get their individual rates compared with their peers. This specific feedback has resulted in a 30% decrease of rates.

What used to take me a week to organize and analyze data from each of 8 clinics, now takes less than 2 hours-department productivity savings of 456 hours, a saving of
$18,180. Non-traditional uses of AICE include MRSA Patient Registry, employee competency exam registry, results of special training programs.
